Do Salt Water Pools Freeze? Winter Protection Guide

Between the $800 winterizing quote I just got and hearing horror stories about frozen saltwater pools, I'm wondering if there's anything special I need to know before winter hits.
The pool store told me that salt water systems are different from regular chlorine pools, but they didn't really explain much about winterization.

Do salt water pools actually freeze like regular pools? I've heard conflicting things - some people say the salt prevents freezing, others say it doesn't matter. I want to make sure I'm preparing properly and not going to come back to any nasty surprises in the spring. Any guidance would be really appreciated!…more

Can You Use Pool Water for Garden? Safe Irrigation Guide

Last fall when I drained my pool for winter, I couldn't shake the feeling that thousands of gallons going down the drain could've watered my entire garden instead. We grow tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs that my kids love to help harvest and eat.

I know pool water has chlorine and other chemicals, but I'm not sure what levels are safe for plants or if there's a way to make it garden-safe. Are there specific chemical levels I should test for before using it? I want to make sure we're not contaminating the soil or creating any health risks for my family when we eat the vegetables.…more

Salt Water Pool Skin Irritation: Causes & Solutions

Finally got my 15,000-gallon saltwater pool dialed in and my kids are still coming out with red, burning skin after every swim. We switched to saltwater specifically because I thought it would be gentler than traditional chlorine pools, but now I'm second-guessing that decision.

Is this normal for saltwater pools? What could be causing the irritation, and more importantly, how can I fix it to make sure the water is safe for my kids to swim in? I really want to understand what's going wrong with our pool chemistry so I can get this resolved quickly.…more

Calcium Hardness Too High But My Fill Water Is Just As Hard

During my last water test, my calcium hardness came back at somewhere around 600 ppm, which I know is way above the recommended range of 200–400 ppm. The frustrating part is that my tap water tests at nearly the same hardness level, so draining and refilling the pool doesn't seem like it would actually help — I'd basically just be starting back at square one with equally hard water. Everything I've read says to partially drain and dilute, but when the numbers on my fill water don't add up to any real improvement, that solution seems pointless.

I'm in a region where hard water is just a fact of life, and I can't find a clear answer on what chemical treatments actually lower calcium hardness directly in the pool. Is there something I'm missing here, or am I stuck just managing the problem rather than fixing it?…more

Can Salt Water Pool Turn Hair Green? Prevention & Solutions

Planning to enjoy our new 25,000 gallon saltwater pool this summer, but I'm completely stumped why my daughter's blonde hair keeps turning green after every swim. I always thought salt water pools were supposed to be gentler than traditional chlorine pools, so I'm confused about what's happening here.

My salt cell has been running normally and chlorine levels test around 2-3 ppm, which seems right. The pH hovers around 7.4 and alkalinity is at 120 ppm. I've tried different shampoos and even bought a clarifying treatment, but the green keeps coming back after she swims. Is there something in salt water that causes this discoloration, or am I missing something with my water chemistry? I really want to figure out how to prevent this from happening again.…more

How to Tell If Your Pool Has a Leak - Step-by-Step Detection

Noticed my pool water dropped three inches this week at 11 PM tonight — need to figure out if there's a leak before my pool guy arrives tomorrow morning. I mean, I know some water evaporates naturally, especially with this heat, but it seems like more than usual.

Is there like a reliable way to test whether it's just normal evaporation or if there's actually a leak? I don't want to call a pool guy and pay a fortune if it turns out to be nothing, but I also don't want to ignore a real problem.…more

How to Set Up and Maintain a Salt Water Pool - Complete Guide

The pool service quote to convert my inherited chlorine pool to saltwater was over $1,200 — is there a DIY way for under $800? The pool store told me it's easier to maintain, but I honestly have no idea where to start or what I'm getting myself into.

What exactly do I need to buy and install? I keep hearing about salt generators and different chemical levels - how much salt am I supposed to add, and do I still need to worry about chlorine and all that other stuff? Any step-by-step guidance would be amazing since I'm pretty overwhelmed right now.…more

Do Salt Water Pools Need Chemicals? Complete Guide

Our saltwater pool area reeks of that sharp chlorine smell every morning, which seems impossible since we were told these systems are basically chemical-free.

But now I'm reading conflicting information online. The pool store told me I'd still need to buy some chemicals, but I'm confused about what exactly. I thought the salt system was supposed to handle everything? What chemicals do salt water pools actually need, and why? I want to make sure I'm taking proper care of the pool and keeping the water safe for my family.…more

Above Ground Pool Problems: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Our above ground pool faces the exact same maddening issues every single spring, and we're tired of getting ripped off by overpriced pool store "solutions. Between overpriced chemicals and costly service calls, I'm looking to become more self-sufficient with pool maintenance.

My pool seems to have different issues throughout the season - sometimes the water looks off, other times the pump isn't working right, and occasionally I notice problems with the liner or walls. Rather than guessing or getting upsold every time, I'd love a systematic way to figure out what's actually wrong so I can tackle these problems myself and save some money.…more

Can Pool Liners Shrink? Causes, Prevention & Solutions

Finally asking what's probably a dumb question, but why does my vinyl liner keep pulling away from the pool walls, especially after this cold snap we had? Is this normal shrinkage or something else?

What causes pool liners to shrink? Want to know if I can prevent this or if I need professional help.…more

Can I Open Pool Cover With Water On It? Safe Removal Guide

Finally facing spring opening and worried it's dangerous to remove my winter pool cover with all that standing water on top while my kids are constantly playing nearby? Can Salt Water Pools Be Heated? Complete Heating Guide

Halfway through summer my salt water pool heater works perfectly when it's below 80 degrees outside, but shuts down completely once temperatures hit the mid-80s. My current setup uses a standard salt water chlorine generator, and I'm concerned about potential interference or operational conflicts when adding a heating system.

Specifically, I need to understand which heating methods work effectively with salt water systems - whether gas, electric, heat pump, or solar options present any technical limitations. Are there material compatibility requirements I should consider, particularly regarding corrosion resistance with the salt water chemistry?

Looking for precise guidance on heating system selection and any modifications needed to ensure reliable operation with my existing salt water generator setup.…more

How Pool Cartridge Filters Work: Complete Troubleshooting

Spent another spring weekend dealing with my cartridge filter acting up again, and I'm done getting ripped off at the pool store instead of fixing it myself. The guys there always want to sell me expensive new cartridges or additives, but I feel like if I understood what's actually happening inside the filter, I could maintain it better.

What's the step-by-step process of how water gets cleaned as it passes through? I know there's some kind of fabric material involved, but I want to understand the nitty-gritty details of how particles get trapped and what size debris these things can actually handle.…more

Do You Need to Shock Pool After Filling? Complete Guide

Staring at my freshly filled pool with a bucket of shock in hand — is it safe to dump this in right away, or could it damage anything? We just finished filling our 18x36 inground pool after having some liner work done this spring. The water came from our well and looks crystal clear, but I'm wondering if I need to shock it before my family starts swimming? A neighbor mentioned something about always shocking after a fresh fill, but I'm not sure if that's necessary since the water looks fine. What's the proper procedure here? I have test strips but haven't checked the chemistry yet - wanted to get some advice first on whether shocking is a must-do step.…more

How Solar Pool Heaters Work: Diagnosis & Troubleshooting

According to what I spotted this morning, my solar heater panels are just sitting there doing absolutely nothing while every "expert" keeps pushing gas systems instead. They keep pushing these pricey gas heaters and telling me solar is "complicated" - probably because there's less markup for them.

I want to understand the actual process of how solar pool heaters function before I make any decisions. Do they really just use the sun's energy somehow? I'm hoping to find a more cost-effective heating solution and maybe even explore some DIY options instead of getting ripped off again.…more
