Winterize your pool: lower water, blow out lines, add winter chemicals, cover.

Ideal Pool Chemistry Ranges

Keep your pool water balanced within these recommended ranges:

ParameterIdeal RangeNotes
Free Chlorine (FC)Based on CYAMin FC = CYA ÷ 20 (rounded up)
pH7.4 - 7.6Affects chlorine effectiveness and comfort
Total Alkalinity (TA)60-80 (SWG) / 80-120 ppmBuffers pH; SWG pools run lower
Cyanuric Acid (CYA)30-50 / 70-80 ppm (SWG)Protects chlorine from sunlight
Calcium Hardness (CH)250-400 (plaster) / 150-250 (vinyl)Prevents etching and liner damage
Salt (SWG only)3000-3500 ppmCheck your SWG manufacturer specs

What is TFP/SLAM?

TFP (Trouble Free Pool) is a methodology for maintaining crystal clear pool water using the FC/CYA relationship chart instead of arbitrary "shock" levels. It emphasizes testing and adjusting based on actual water chemistry.

SLAM (Shock Level And Maintain) is the TFP process for clearing algae or cloudy water. Raise chlorine to "shock level" based on your CYA, then maintain it 24/7 until you pass three tests: clear water, zero CC, and overnight FC loss under 1 ppm.
