Can You Use Pool Water for Garden? Safe Irrigation Guide

Last fall when I drained my pool for winter, I couldn't shake the feeling that thousands of gallons going down the drain could've watered my entire garden instead. We grow tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs that my kids love to help harvest and eat.

I know pool water has chlorine and other chemicals, but I'm not sure what levels are safe for plants or if there's a way to make it garden-safe. Are there specific chemical levels I should test for before using it? I want to make sure we're not contaminating the soil or creating any health risks for my family when we eat the vegetables.…more

Calcium Hardness Too High But My Fill Water Is Just As Hard

During my last water test, my calcium hardness came back at somewhere around 600 ppm, which I know is way above the recommended range of 200–400 ppm. The frustrating part is that my tap water tests at nearly the same hardness level, so draining and refilling the pool doesn't seem like it would actually help — I'd basically just be starting back at square one with equally hard water. Everything I've read says to partially drain and dilute, but when the numbers on my fill water don't add up to any real improvement, that solution seems pointless.

I'm in a region where hard water is just a fact of life, and I can't find a clear answer on what chemical treatments actually lower calcium hardness directly in the pool. Is there something I'm missing here, or am I stuck just managing the problem rather than fixing it?…more

Can Salt Water Pool Turn Hair Green? Prevention & Solutions

Planning to enjoy our new 25,000 gallon saltwater pool this summer, but I'm completely stumped why my daughter's blonde hair keeps turning green after every swim. I always thought salt water pools were supposed to be gentler than traditional chlorine pools, so I'm confused about what's happening here.

My salt cell has been running normally and chlorine levels test around 2-3 ppm, which seems right. The pH hovers around 7.4 and alkalinity is at 120 ppm. I've tried different shampoos and even bought a clarifying treatment, but the green keeps coming back after she swims. Is there something in salt water that causes this discoloration, or am I missing something with my water chemistry? I really want to figure out how to prevent this from happening again.…more

How to Tell If Your Pool Has a Leak - Step-by-Step Detection

Noticed my pool water dropped three inches this week at 11 PM tonight — need to figure out if there's a leak before my pool guy arrives tomorrow morning. I mean, I know some water evaporates naturally, especially with this heat, but it seems like more than usual.

Is there like a reliable way to test whether it's just normal evaporation or if there's actually a leak? I don't want to call a pool guy and pay a fortune if it turns out to be nothing, but I also don't want to ignore a real problem.…more

Do Salt Water Pools Need Chemicals? Complete Guide

Our saltwater pool area reeks of that sharp chlorine smell every morning, which seems impossible since we were told these systems are basically chemical-free.

But now I'm reading conflicting information online. The pool store told me I'd still need to buy some chemicals, but I'm confused about what exactly. I thought the salt system was supposed to handle everything? What chemicals do salt water pools actually need, and why? I want to make sure I'm taking proper care of the pool and keeping the water safe for my family.…more

Do Salt Water Pools Stay Clean? Complete Maintenance Guide

Already three weeks into this rental with a salt water pool I've never maintained before and getting nasty algae blooms plus cloudy water. My generator is running fine and producing chlorine, but somehow I still have to test chemicals, brush walls, and fight green water.

What am I missing here? Does the salt water system actually keep the pool clean on its own, or is there still a bunch of regular maintenance I need to be doing? I feel like I got sold a bill of goods about how "easy" salt water pools are supposed to be.…more

Cartridge vs Sand Filter: Is Switching Worth It?

Three summers of hauling cartridges out of my filter housing, blasting them with a hose, and letting them dry in the backyard — and I'm at my breaking point. The funny thing is it only really feels unbearable when it's above 85°F outside, because that's when the algae pressure picks up and I'm pulling the cartridges every couple of weeks instead of once a month. During the cooler shoulder season the system works fine and I barely think about it.

My neighbor runs a sand filter and swears he just backwashes it every few weeks and forgets about it. Replacement cartridges for my setup run me somewhere around $100–$150 a pop, and they don't last as long as I'd like. I'm seriously considering making the jump to sand — but I want to know what that conversion actually costs, whether I'll regret the water clarity trade-off, and whether the long-term math actually works out in my favor.

Is converting from cartridge to sand a genuinely smart move for a medium-sized in-ground pool, or am I just reacting to a hot-weather frustration? What are the real trade-offs I should be thinking through before I commit?…more

Above Ground Pool Problems: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Our above ground pool faces the exact same maddening issues every single spring, and we're tired of getting ripped off by overpriced pool store "solutions. Between overpriced chemicals and costly service calls, I'm looking to become more self-sufficient with pool maintenance.

My pool seems to have different issues throughout the season - sometimes the water looks off, other times the pump isn't working right, and occasionally I notice problems with the liner or walls. Rather than guessing or getting upsold every time, I'd love a systematic way to figure out what's actually wrong so I can tackle these problems myself and save some money.…more

Can Pool Liners Shrink? Causes, Prevention & Solutions

Finally asking what's probably a dumb question, but why does my vinyl liner keep pulling away from the pool walls, especially after this cold snap we had? Is this normal shrinkage or something else?

What causes pool liners to shrink? Want to know if I can prevent this or if I need professional help.…more

Do Salt Water Pools Use Chlorine? The Complete Truth

Since getting my salt water pool, I've been too embarrassed to ask this probably obvious question: does it actually use chlorine or not? Some say salt water pools are chlorine-free, others say they still have chlorine. Which is it?

Looking at switching from traditional chlorine but want to understand what I'm actually getting into. Does the salt system eliminate chlorine completely or not?…more

Do You Need to Shock Pool After Filling? Complete Guide

Staring at my freshly filled pool with a bucket of shock in hand — is it safe to dump this in right away, or could it damage anything? We just finished filling our 18x36 inground pool after having some liner work done this spring. The water came from our well and looks crystal clear, but I'm wondering if I need to shock it before my family starts swimming? A neighbor mentioned something about always shocking after a fresh fill, but I'm not sure if that's necessary since the water looks fine. What's the proper procedure here? I have test strips but haven't checked the chemistry yet - wanted to get some advice first on whether shocking is a must-do step.…more

Can Green Pool Water Make You Sick? Health Risks Explained

Nobody believed me when I said our pool looked dangerous until my husband walked outside and said it resembles a literal swamp. I know it looks gross but is green water actually dangerous or just unsightly?

How Solar Pool Heaters Work: Diagnosis & Troubleshooting

According to what I spotted this morning, my solar heater panels are just sitting there doing absolutely nothing while every "expert" keeps pushing gas systems instead. They keep pushing these pricey gas heaters and telling me solar is "complicated" - probably because there's less markup for them.

I want to understand the actual process of how solar pool heaters function before I make any decisions. Do they really just use the sun's energy somehow? I'm hoping to find a more cost-effective heating solution and maybe even explore some DIY options instead of getting ripped off again.…more

How to Winterize Pool: Complete Troubleshooting Guide 2026

After ignoring winterization last fall, my pool pipes started making weird cracking sounds this spring and now I'm staring at burst pipes and algae soup. I'm determined not to repeat that nightmare! I know it involves chemicals and lowering water levels, but I'm clearly missing something important in my process.

What's the complete step-by-step process for winterizing? How long should I plan for this whole ordeal, and what are the critical steps I probably screwed up last time? I want to make sure I'm protecting against freeze damage while keeping the water in decent shape for spring startup.…more

How to Clear Cloudy Milky Pool Water After Opening

Nobody warned me that buying this house meant inheriting a pool that looks like a giant glass of milk from the previous owner's neglect. It's not green, just really cloudy and white-ish. I can barely see the bottom of the shallow end. I shocked it when I opened but that was about a week ago. The filter has been running but doesn't seem to be helping much. What's the best way to get this cleared up? I have a sand filter if that matters.…more
