How to Prime Your Pool Pump: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Looked at my pool pump this morning and there's absolutely no water flowing through it even though it's running. The pump basket was completely dry when I opened it up, and now I'm getting no water flow when I turn it back on. I know I need to prime it somehow, but I want to make sure I do this right without damaging anything. What's the correct step-by-step process to get water flowing through the system again? I'm comfortable working with the equipment, just want to avoid any rookie mistakes.…more

How to Connect Pool Vacuum - Complete Setup Guide

Staring at pool vacuum options online with my credit card ready, but genuinely wondering if I'm about to blow money on something that'll actually work. Need to connect it properly but instructions are confusing. What's the right order to attach everything - the head, pole, hose? And how do I connect to the skimmer without losing suction?…more

How to Vacuum a Pool: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

My pool guy mentioned that I might not be vacuuming properly, and honestly, I'm starting to think he's right. I've been just dragging this vacuum head around randomly and it doesn't seem to be picking up much debris.

Can someone walk me through the actual proper technique for vacuuming? Like how do you set everything up, get it working right, and make sure you're actually cleaning effectively? I'm willing to put in the work if someone can just tell me the correct way to do this!…more

Pool Pump Loses Prime Overnight? Here's the Fix

Found the pump basket completely packed with air again this morning when I went out to check on the pool — same thing that happened yesterday, and the day before that. Once I manually fill the housing with water and get it going, the pump runs beautifully all day with no issues at all. But the second I shut it off for the night and try to fire it back up, it just churns away with a basket full of air and refuses to catch on its own.

This has become a frustrating daily ritual. I have a standard above-ground setup and the pump is maybe three or four years old. Water level in the pool looks fine, and I haven't noticed any obvious drips or wet spots around the equipment pad. I'm not sure if this is a seal issue, something with a valve, or just normal wear and tear at this point.

Is there a way to track down exactly where the air is sneaking in? I'd love to fix this myself if it's something manageable, or at least know what I'm dealing with before calling someone out.…more

How Pool Skimmers Work: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Walked out to check my pool skimmer this morning and I'm staring at all these mysterious parts with zero clue how they work together. They keep pitching fancy skimmer upgrades and I don't even know how my current skimmer is supposed to work in the first place.

I see leaves and bugs floating on the surface and sometimes they get sucked into that rectangular opening, but other times debris just sits there. Is there something I should be doing differently, or is this normal? I'd rather understand the basics before these salespeople convince me I need to spend hundreds on upgrades.

Basically, what's the step-by-step process of how water and debris move through a skimmer system? I want to know if mine is working properly or if there's a DIY fix I can try first.…more

Above Ground Pool Problems: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Our above ground pool faces the exact same maddening issues every single spring, and we're tired of getting ripped off by overpriced pool store "solutions. Between overpriced chemicals and costly service calls, I'm looking to become more self-sufficient with pool maintenance.

My pool seems to have different issues throughout the season - sometimes the water looks off, other times the pump isn't working right, and occasionally I notice problems with the liner or walls. Rather than guessing or getting upsold every time, I'd love a systematic way to figure out what's actually wrong so I can tackle these problems myself and save some money.…more

How to Program Variable Speed Pool Pump - Complete Guide

Nobody warned me that after the pool guy installed my new variable speed pump yesterday, I'd be staring at this digital display like it's speaking ancient Greek. The installer basically ran off after hooking it up and now I'm supposed to figure out how to program different speeds throughout the day.

I get that I'm supposed to run it at different RPMs at different times to save energy, but honestly have no clue where to start. Like, what speeds should I use and when? And how do I actually punch this stuff into the control panel? My old single-speed pump was so much simpler - just flip the switch and forget about it!…more

How Long to Run Your Pool Pump and Filter Daily - Complete Guide

Every pool season I feel like an idiot asking this, but I genuinely have no idea how many hours my filter should actually be running daily. My kids swim almost every day during summer, and I want to make sure the water stays clean and safe for them. I've heard different opinions - some neighbors say they run theirs 24/7, while others only run it a few hours.

I'm worried about under-filtering and having bacteria or algae grow, but I also don't want to waste electricity if it's not necessary. Our pool gets heavy use with the kids and their friends, plus we've had some really hot weather lately. What's the right balance for daily filter runtime to keep the water properly clean?…more

Add a Shutoff Valve to Your Pool Waste Line

My pool equipment pad has a waste line that just dumps straight out to the side yard with zero control — no valve, nothing. I found a YouTube tutorial on how to splice in a shutoff valve, grabbed the supplies, and cut into the pipe... and now I've got a bigger mess than before. The dry-fit didn't hold the way the video showed, one of my cuts came out slightly angled, and I'm second-guessing the whole thing before I actually glue anything permanently.

The waste line is 1½-inch PVC coming off the back of my multiport filter valve. It dribbles between backwash cycles because there's nothing shutting it off, and I'd like to fix that properly. I want to understand what type of valve to actually use here, how to prep the pipe ends correctly after a rough cut, and how to solvent-weld everything so it doesn't leak or blow apart under pressure.

Can someone walk me through the real process — choosing the right valve, making clean cuts, dry-fitting, priming and cementing, and how long I need to wait before firing the pump back up? I want to get this right the second time.…more

Can You Paint Above Ground Pool? Complete Guide & Best Methods

Called it—after all that rain last week, my above ground pool looks even more rusty and faded than before, practically mocking me from the backyard. It's become such an eyesore that I'm embarrassed to have people over. I've been researching pool painting but getting mixed information online - some say it works great, others say it's a waste of time and money.

My pool is one of those standard metal frame ones, probably about 15 years old with some rust spots and serious fading. I'm willing to put in the work if it'll actually make a difference, but I need to know if this is even feasible or if I'm just setting myself up for disappointment. What type of paint works on these things, and do I need special prep work?…more

How Long Should a Pool Pump Last? Lifespan & Replacement Guide

Got a weird grinding noise from my pool pump last month but now it's barely pushing any water through the system!
My current pump is about 6 years old and still running fine, but I'm wondering when I should start budgeting for a replacement.

I've heard different things from pool store guys - some say 5-6 years, others say they can go way longer. Mine's been pretty reliable so far, but I'd rather not get caught off guard. Are there any warning signs I should watch for that mean it's time to start shopping around? And does it matter if I upgrade to one of those variable speed pumps everyone talks about?…more

How to Fix a Clogged Pool Pump Impeller

My pool pump started making a grinding noise yesterday and the water flow through the skimmer has slowed to almost nothing — and we're hosting a big backyard pool party this Saturday. The filter pressure is reading lower than normal, which I've read can mean a clogged impeller. I pulled out the strainer basket and it had some debris in it, but even after cleaning it out the flow is still weak.

I'm pretty handy and would love to tackle this myself if it's doable without a pro. Can anyone walk me through how to actually get into the impeller and clear it out safely? I want to make sure I don't damage anything in the process — and I definitely need the pump running properly before the weekend.…more
