Where to Drain Pool Water When Winterizing

Where to Drain Pool Water When Winterizing

Nobody told me this part would be confusing. When I started dropping the water level to close the pool for winter, I realized I had absolutely no idea where that water is actually supposed to go. My pool is an inground, and right now I've got a submersible pump running — but I keep stopping because I'm genuinely not sure if I'm about to flood my neighbor's yard or create a problem with the municipality.

The water has to go somewhere, obviously, but there seem to be a few options and I can't figure out which one is actually correct. Is it okay to run it out to the street drain? Can I just let it soak into the yard? Or is there a hookup to the sewer I should be using instead?

I want to do this right and not get a fine or cause a drainage mess. Any guidance would be really helpful before I crank the pump back on.…more

How to Clean Pool Cartridge Filters - Complete Guide

Since following that popular YouTube tutorial on cleaning my cartridge filters, they're somehow more clogged than before and my flow rate dropped even worse. My current filters are showing signs of debris accumulation and reduced flow rates, indicating it's time for cleaning.

What's the correct methodology for cleaning these filters, and what frequency should I maintain for optimal filtration performance? I want to ensure I'm following proper procedures to maximize filter lifespan while maintaining water quality standards.…more

How Long Do Inground Pool Liners Last? Complete Guide

Replaced my inground pool liner three years ago — the pool store mentioned that I'll eventually need to replace the vinyl liner, but they didn't give me much detail about timing.

How long do these liners typically last before needing replacement? Is it something I should be budgeting for in the next few years, or is it more of a long-term expense? I want to make sure I'm taking proper care of it so it lasts as long as possible.…more

Should You Cover Pool Equipment in Winter? Protection Guide

After 8 years, my pool pump and filter system are developing rust spots — should I invest in winter covers or just replace everything? They're pushing these fancy insulated covers for my pump, heater, and control panel, but I feel like they're just trying to empty my wallet again.

Do I actually need to cover all my pool equipment for winter, or is this another one of their money grabs? If protection is really necessary, are there cheaper DIY alternatives that work just as well? I'm sick of spending a fortune on overpriced pool store solutions when there might be simple ways to winterize my equipment without breaking the bank.…more

Do Inflatable Pools Need Chemicals? Complete Summer Guide

Nobody seems to agree on whether inflatable pools need chemical treatment! My neighbor insists that small pools don't need any chemicals since you can just dump and refill them weekly. The pool store salesperson tried selling me a whole starter kit with chlorine, pH strips, and shock treatment. Meanwhile, YouTube videos are split - some say just use a little bleach, others say chemicals are overkill for temporary pools. I've got a 12-foot inflatable that we'll be using all summer with the kids. The water's starting to look a bit cloudy after just a few days, so I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and start treating it properly or stick with the drain-and-refill approach.…more

Why Is the Lincoln Reflecting Pool Green—and Why Not Shock It?

I saw the photos of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool gone bright green again, days after they finished a big renovation. I run my own backyard pool, and when mine goes green I shock the daylights out of it and it clears up in a couple of days. So why is the government out there pouring hydrogen peroxide and scraping algae by hand off a national monument? Why don't they just shock the thing like the rest of us do? What am I missing?…more

Are Solar Pool Skimmers Worth It? Honest Answer

Three large maple trees hang over my pool and I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle every single day of swim season. Bought a better net, upgraded to a wider wall skimmer basket, and even started running my pump longer hours — leaves are still plastering the surface faster than I can clear them. My pool filter is working overtime and I'm out there with the pole twice a day like it's a second job.

A neighbor mentioned she picked up one of those solar-powered floating skimmer robots and swears it changed her life. I've seen them advertised everywhere lately and part of me thinks it's just a gadget designed to take my money. Are these solar skimmers genuinely useful for a high-debris situation like mine, or are they more suited to pools with light surface litter? I don't want to drop real money on something that'll float helplessly while leaves laugh at it.…more
