Results for "pool terms"

I keep seeing pool terms and abbreviations like SLAM, CYA, FC, PSI, sanitizer, backwash, and shock. What do they mean in plain English?…more

It started with a few embarrassing typos in my pool maintenance logs last month and turned into me questioning every word I write about my 20,000-gallon inground system. Obviously I know how to spell the basic word "pool," but I want to be thorough and professional in my record-keeping.

When I'm documenting chemical treatments, test results, and communicating with pool service companies, proper spelling and terminology seems important for clear communication. I've noticed that using incorrect terms or spellings can sometimes lead to confusion when discussing maintenance procedures with professionals.

Can someone confirm the correct spelling of "pool" and explain why proper pool terminology matters when dealing with maintenance documentation and professional communications?…more

Nobody warns you that every spring when you're getting the pool ready for summer, figuring out how long cleaning actually takes becomes this recurring nightmare. I want to make sure the water is properly cleaned before they jump in, but I'm not sure how long each type of cleaner needs to run to do its job effectively.

I'm considering getting either a robotic cleaner, suction cleaner, or pressure cleaner, but I need to know how much time each one requires per cleaning cycle. I want to plan the cleaning times around when the kids aren't swimming, so knowing the exact duration would really help me create a safe routine that keeps the water clean without interfering with their swim time.…more

The white slime on my pool walls tripled in size after I followed three different YouTube cleaning tutorials. I've been treating it like regular green algae - shocked it multiple times, balanced my chemicals, the whole nine yards. But this white stuff just keeps coming back and it doesn't look like any algae I've dealt with before.

Is white algae even a thing? Or am I dealing with something completely different here? The texture is almost... fluffy? And it seems to stick to surfaces more than regular algae. I'm starting to think I need a different approach but I don't want to keep throwing chemicals at the wrong problem.…more

Nobody told me that looking at my pool chemical shelf right now with all these bottles means I'd have no clue which are safe for the spa. I want to make sure the water is properly sanitized for the kids, but I'm concerned about whether pool chemicals work the same way in the smaller, hotter water environment.

I currently have chlorine tablets, pH adjusters, and some alkalinity products for our pool. Are there any specific pool chemicals I should avoid using in the spa? I just want to ensure the water is safe and clean for my family without accidentally creating any health risks by using the wrong products.…more

Apparently planning to tackle our inground pool installation this spring — what should I have budgeted and ready before contractors start calling back? Some contractors are quoting us wildly different amounts and I can't tell what's reasonable.

I know there are different types of pools - concrete, vinyl liner, and fiberglass - but I have no idea which offers the best value for a family with young children. We want something safe and durable that won't break the bank, but we also don't want to cut corners on quality when it comes to our kids' safety.

Can someone break down what I should realistically expect to spend on each type of inground pool? I just want to make sure we're budgeting appropriately and not getting taken advantage of by contractors.…more

My backyard pool has developed a really strong chemical smell, my kids come out with red burning eyes every single time they swim, AND a neighbor mentioned my chlorine levels might actually be too low despite the overpowering odor — all at the same time. I test my water regularly and I keep adding chlorine, so I'm confused why it smells so strong and still seems to be underperforming as a sanitizer.

Someone at the pool store told me what I'm smelling isn't really chlorine at all — it's something called chloramines or 'combined chlorine' — and that this actually means my free chlorine is being used up and isn't working properly. That really surprised me because I always assumed the strong smell meant there was too much chlorine in the water.

Can someone explain exactly what chloramines are, where they come from, and what I need to do to get rid of them? I want to understand the chemistry so I'm actually solving the problem and not just dumping in more product that won't help.…more

Found a stain and scale preventer bottle sitting in my pool closing kit and I'm second-guessing whether it's even doing what I think it is. My test strips show iron levels that seem higher than anything my neighbors deal with — we're on a private well — and last spring when I pulled the cover off, the walls had this ugly brownish tint that took forever to address. Everything I've read says sequestrants handle metal staining, but my closing kit just says 'stain and scale preventer' on the label, which is confusing me about whether they're the same thing or two totally different products.

The numbers that are throwing me off: my alkalinity is reading around 100 ppm and pH is at 7.4, so those seem fine going into winter. But I have no idea how to measure whether the stain preventer is even working or at what concentration it should be in the water. Is this the right product to stop the brown metal staining from my well water, and does it go in before or after the other closing chemicals? I don't want to waste the bottle if it's not actually helping.…more

Nobody warned me how quickly pool closing decisions can snowball. Ever since I started prepping for winter shutdown last week, I've been second-guessing every step — but the one I keep coming back to is whether to toss a floater loaded with trichlor pucks in before I pull the cover on. My thinking was that it would keep things sanitized all season while the pump sits idle, but now I'm hearing it might cause more problems than it solves.

I have a vinyl liner pool, and I'm a little nervous about anything that could stain or bleach it while I'm not checking the water regularly. Is there a smarter way to keep the water from going completely feral under the cover, or is a floater actually fine if I set it up right?…more
