Where to Drain a Saltwater Pool Safely

Found out the hard way that you can't just dump saltwater pool water wherever you want. Moved into this place a couple months ago and the previous owners left a saltwater pool I'm still figuring out. The water level was way too high after some heavy rain, so I pumped a bunch out into the backyard near one of the trees. About a week later the grass in that spot turned brown and the tree is looking very dead. Now I still need to lower the water level but I'm terrified to touch anything.

Where are you actually supposed to put saltwater pool water when you need to drain some out? Is the sewer cleanout pipe okay to use? Can you run it to the street gutter? I've heard you can spread it on grass but obviously my grass is dead where I tried that. How damaging is pool salt to trees and plants compared to, say, the chlorine? I want to fix this without killing anything else.…more

Can I Vacuum Pool on Waste? Complete Filter Setting Guide

Halfway through prepping for our pool party this Saturday, I realized I have no clue which filter setting to use when vacuuming all this debris. The guy at the pool store mentioned something about using the "waste" setting when vacuuming, but I didn't really understand what he meant. Does this actually work, and when should I be using waste instead of the regular filter setting? I don't want to mess anything up since I'm still learning all this stuff.…more

Can You Use Pool Water for Garden? Safe Irrigation Guide

Last fall when I drained my pool for winter, I couldn't shake the feeling that thousands of gallons going down the drain could've watered my entire garden instead. We grow tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs that my kids love to help harvest and eat.

I know pool water has chlorine and other chemicals, but I'm not sure what levels are safe for plants or if there's a way to make it garden-safe. Are there specific chemical levels I should test for before using it? I want to make sure we're not contaminating the soil or creating any health risks for my family when we eat the vegetables.…more
