Looked all over town yesterday for pool salt and every store nearby is sold out, so I topped up what little I had left and now I'm sitting just under the target level on my salt chlorine generator. I've got a full bag of regular iodized table salt in the pantry, a half-bag of water softener pellets in the garage, and some leftover ice-melt from winter. The generator is still reading low and I don't want to wait a week for an online order to arrive.

I'm wondering if any of those substitutes will actually work in a pinch, or if dumping the wrong stuff in will trash the salt cell. The replacement cells aren't cheap, so I really don't want to find out the hard way. What actually makes pool-grade salt different from the other stuff sitting in my garage?…more

I've got a regular chlorine pool — just the standard setup with a skimmer, pump, and filter, and no saltwater chlorinator. A neighbor mentioned I could add some pool salt to the water to make it nicer to swim in. Before I dump a bunch of salt in, I want to make sure I'm not making a mistake: will adding salt actually do anything useful in a pool without a salt system, or am I just setting myself up for problems?…more

I tried figuring out how my neighbor's salt cell creates perfect chlorinated water while mine struggles, but I'm completely lost on how salt actually becomes chlorine.
Like, I get that I add salt to the pool and somehow it becomes chlorine, but what's the actual process happening in there?

Is it some kind of chemical reaction or what? And why does my pH always seem to creep up when the salt cell is running - is that related to whatever's going on inside the cell too?…more

During my last water test, my calcium hardness came back at somewhere around 600 ppm, which I know is way above the recommended range of 200–400 ppm. The frustrating part is that my tap water tests at nearly the same hardness level, so draining and refilling the pool doesn't seem like it would actually help — I'd basically just be starting back at square one with equally hard water. Everything I've read says to partially drain and dilute, but when the numbers on my fill water don't add up to any real improvement, that solution seems pointless.

I'm in a region where hard water is just a fact of life, and I can't find a clear answer on what chemical treatments actually lower calcium hardness directly in the pool. Is there something I'm missing here, or am I stuck just managing the problem rather than fixing it?…more
