Last fall when I drained my pool for winter, I couldn't shake the feeling that thousands of gallons going down the drain could've watered my entire garden instead. We grow tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs that my kids love to help harvest and eat.

I know pool water has chlorine and other chemicals, but I'm not sure what levels are safe for plants or if there's a way to make it garden-safe. Are there specific chemical levels I should test for before using it? I want to make sure we're not contaminating the soil or creating any health risks for my family when we eat the vegetables.…more

Walked out to my first above ground pool today and realized I'm completely clueless about how to actually drain this thing properly. My pool has turned into a swamp despite throwing every chemical at it, and I've finally accepted that I need to just drain this thing and start over. I've heard about using pumps, siphons, or maybe there's a drain somewhere, but honestly I have no clue what's going to be fastest.

Time is kind of a factor since I'd like to get this sorted before the weekend if possible. What's the most efficient method to get all this nasty water out of my above ground pool, and roughly how long should I expect it to take?…more
