Last week my pool guy swore 20-silica sand is all the same, but my filter's clogging in 2 months instead of the 6-month replacement schedule everyone talks about. The guy there was trying to sell me on some fancy zeolite stuff that costs way more than regular sand.

I mean, sand is sand, right? Or does the type actually affect how well it filters and how often I'll need to backwash? Don't want to cheap out if it means dealing with cloudy water all summer, but also don't want to get upsold on something that's just marketing hype.…more

Before I discovered my sand filter was the culprit, my pool was eating through chlorine way faster than it should even with perfect 2.5 ppm levels and 7.4 pH. When I opened up the filter tank to check, I discovered that most of the sand has somehow disappeared - there's maybe 20% left at the bottom.

I'm waiting for a sand delivery that won't arrive for another week, but my pool is getting cloudier by the day. Filter pressure won't come down even after backwashing and cleaning the cartridges twice. Pool water is starting to look hazy and the pump sounds like it's working harder than usual. Trying to figure out if I need new filter elements or if the whole filter unit is shot.…more

Already replaced my pool filter sand yesterday but the water's still cloudy — did I mess something up or is Walmart sand just not the right type? Does anyone know if Walmart actually stocks this stuff? I'd love to just grab it during my regular grocery run instead of making another trip to a pool store.

Also, if they do carry it, any idea what brands they have and roughly what I should expect to pay? I don't want to show up and get sticker shock if it's way overpriced compared to other places.…more

Looked everywhere for answers — backwashed three times, scrubbed the cartridge, balanced all chemicals perfectly, but my pool water stays cloudy and the pressure gauge won't budge. Water's been cloudier than usual even though my chemistry is spot on. Pool shop guy mentioned something about changing the sand but didn't give specifics.
