Finally moved into my new house and discovered the previous owner left a storage room packed with mystery pool chemical bottles that could be years old. My 20,000-gallon inground pool requires quite a bit of chemicals throughout the season, so I tend to buy in bulk when there are sales.

I've got liquid chlorine from last summer, some granular shock that's been sitting for about two years, pH increaser and decreaser from various seasons, and alkalinity increaser that I honestly can't remember when I bought. The containers don't all have clear expiration dates, and I want to know which ones I can safely use this season versus which ones I should replace.

What's the typical shelf life for different types of pool chemicals? I don't want to waste money replacing chemicals that are still good, but I also don't want to add ineffective chemicals to my pool and mess up my water balance.…more

Found some old cyanuric acid in my pool shed and trying to decide between tossing it out and risking expired chemicals on my pool. Been there maybe 2-3 years. Granular stuff looks clumped up from humidity but wondering if it's still good to use.

Opened my pool chemical bottles after reading the "store in cool, dry place" instructions, but now my garage is freezing and I'm questioning if they actually mean below 32 degrees. We had an unexpected cold snap last week and temperatures dropped well below freezing in my garage where I keep all my pool supplies. Halfway through my morning coffee, I spotted my pool chemicals sitting in direct sunlight by my detached shed that definitely weren't there yesterday. Shed gets hot/cold with seasons and sometimes damp. Garage stays more consistent but still gets chilly in winter.

About the third time this season my pool filter balls have turned into a cloudy water nightmare and I'm done playing the guessing game! I switched to filter balls a few months ago hoping they'd be the magic solution, but now I'm wondering if I'm supposed to replace them regularly or what. My pool gets pretty heavy use during summer with the kids and their friends constantly jumping in.
